Chief District Judge Nancy Rosenstengel has temporarily paused preparations for individual paraquat Parkinson's disease cases while the parties pursue what could be the clearest sign yet that a global resolution is close: court approval of a Qualified Settlement Fund. A Qualified Settlement Fund is a court-approved account used in large mass tort cases to collect and hold settlement money before it's distributed to individual claimants — the kind of infrastructure that only gets built once a settlement framework is far enough along to actually start paying people.
As of July 1, 2026, more than 6,665 paraquat plaintiffs remain in the federal MDL, with roughly 1,952 additional cases pending in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. A special master was appointed earlier this year to walk plaintiffs through the details of settlement offers as they've become available.
This litigation has already seen one bellwether trial settle the night before it was set to begin, back in January 2026, and a tentative settlement framework was reportedly reached even earlier, in 2025 — but finalizing it has been repeatedly delayed. Requesting court approval for a Qualified Settlement Fund is a meaningfully different kind of step than a "tentative agreement" announcement: it signals the parties are far enough along that money needs somewhere to actually sit before it's paid out, not just an agreement in principle still being negotiated.
Separately, Syngenta — the manufacturer of paraquat — has already committed to ending global production of the herbicide by mid-2026, and Vermont became the first U.S. state to ban the chemical outright in May 2026, both developments plaintiffs' attorneys have pointed to as reflecting the strength of the underlying science.
A paused MDL and a pending settlement fund are good signs for people with existing claims, but settlement terms and eligibility criteria haven't been finalized or made public.
