On May 4, 2026, Judge Nancy Rosenstengel, who oversees the federal Paraquat Parkinson's disease multidistrict litigation in the Southern District of Illinois, ordered the appointment of a special master to help individual plaintiffs understand and evaluate settlement offers being made under the MDL's evolving global settlement framework. The move is a practical, administrative one, but it signals that the litigation has shifted from a trial-focused posture to one centered on processing payouts for the thousands of people who sued Syngenta and Chevron over paraquat's alleged link to Parkinson's disease.
The special master's role is to give claimants detailed, individualized information about what a settlement offer would actually mean for them financially, so they can make an informed decision about whether to opt in or continue pursuing their case another way. That kind of independent guidance becomes especially important once a mass tort moves into a claims-administration phase, where thousands of people are weighing similar offers without necessarily having the same information in front of them.
The paraquat MDL, formally In re: Paraquat Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 3004), has included more than 6,600 pending federal cases, with additional cases proceeding separately in Pennsylvania state court in Philadelphia. Settlement talks accelerated through the second half of 2025, and the first bellwether trial — brought by a retired landscaper diagnosed with Parkinson's after decades of paraquat use — settled on the eve of opening statements in late January 2026 rather than going before a jury. Since then, Syngenta has resolved additional cases that were headed toward trial without any paraquat case actually reaching a verdict.
A special master helping existing plaintiffs evaluate offers doesn't change the calculus for someone who was exposed to paraquat and later diagnosed with Parkinson's disease but hasn't yet filed a claim. State filing deadlines continue to run on their own timelines, independent of how settlement talks in the MDL progress.
